Climate justice for Jamaica as Caribbean faces worsening climate risks

Climate change is being presented as a present-day crisis for Jamaica, the Caribbean and other small island developing states, with the region heating at an accelerated pace while facing deeper environmental and economic risks.

The warning points to stronger storms, higher insurance bills, worsening shoreline loss, and growing strain on food production and water supplies. Although countries such as Jamaica add very little to global greenhouse gas output, they remain among the places most exposed to climate damage.

The moment is also being framed as a chance to reconsider national choices on construction, planning, enforcement, conservation and governance. At the centre is a question of fairness: whether protection from environmental harm is reserved for those with means, or whether climate and environmental justice can reach all Jamaicans.
