Former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant, LaToya Malcolm died at age 35

Former Miss Universe Jamaica finalist LaToya Malcolm has died. She was only 35.

The organisation announced Malcolm’s death in an Instagram post on the weekend. “In Loving Memory of LaToya Malcolm,” Miss Universe Jamaica wrote. “We mourn the passing of MUJ alumna LaToya Malcolm, who proudly competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica Competition. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and loved ones. Rest peacefully, LaToya. You will never be forgotten.”

The organisation did not share further details or a cause of death. USA TODAY was unable to locate a spokesperson for Malcolm. Rachel Silvera won the year Malcolm competed in the Miss Universe Jamaica competition. Silvera did not make it as a finalist in the overall competition.

In 2024, Malcolm took the title Miss Jamaica Bikini International, winning best figure, best legs and best condition. The TV host and dance instructor attributed her win to a “jam-packed” schedule between work and the gym.

“I live in the gym. I live in the dance studio on the dance floor. I have been so dedicated over the years, and this year the last six to seven months have been jam-packed with work and more dedication,” she said, noting, “these competitions are not just a walk in the park. They are actually made from real sweat and tears.”

Malcolm reported that her win came months after the death of her father that April. On Sunday, July 19, Miss Universe Jamaica 2025 Dr. Gabrielle Henry – who had to leave the competition after sustaining severe injuries after a fall off stage – shared a tribute on her Instagram story.

“After many years of experiencing loss and hardship, I’ve learnt the deep relevance of pausing and reflecting on the lives of those who lived fully, unapologetically and with great passion,” Henry wrote. “To hear of LaToya’s passing is a great loss to her family and the wider community. In Jamaica, her impact will always be remembered, and her voice will not be forgotten. Wishing her family my deepest condolences. May she rest in peace.”
