St, James, Jamaica: Four men killed in St James police operation – The Independent Commission of Investigations is investigating the fatal shooting of four men during a police operation in Retirement, St James, on Wednesday morning.
INDECOM confirmed that it was notified of the incident and has since launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Early reports indicate that members of the security forces were conducting an operation in the community in search of men believed to be involved in a recent murder.
Police reported that they came under attack while carrying out the operation, leading to a gunfight. Four men were shot during the confrontation and later pronounced dead.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased.
The latest incident follows a series of fatal police shootings across the island. On Tuesday alone, seven men were killed in separate encounters involving the security forces in three parishes, bringing the total number of fatalities in such incidents to 11 in under 24 hours.
Data from INDECOM shows that up to June 9, a total of 143 people had been killed in shootings involving members of the security forces this year.
Investigators are expected to examine the scene, collect statements from witnesses and officers, and review forensic evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Both the police and INDECOM say inquiries into the matter are continuing.
