Frazer's Whip and Arnett Gardens seize JWPL semi-final first-leg leads at UWI

Frazer's Whip and Arnett Gardens hold the upper hand after the opening legs of their Jamaica Women's Premier League (JWPL) semi-finals, played on Saturday at the UWI Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence.

Defending champions Frazer's Whip delivered a commanding performance in the second match of a double-header, beating Ramona 5-0. Chanel Spence opened the scoring in the 16th minute and added her second in the 37th for her 18th goal of the season. Two minutes before half-time, league-leading scorer Christina Salmon made it 3-0 with her 24th goal of the campaign. Captain Nevaeh Gilchrist Able struck in the 66th minute, and Ricana Richards sealed the rout in the 86th, leaving Frazer's Whip in a strong position ahead of the return leg.

A representative of the winning side stressed defensive discipline. "That's the aim every game. We have been mean all season with conceding goals — four from 11 games. Five goals scored and none conceded today is a plus for us."

Ramona's camp framed the loss as a lesson against stronger opposition. "We played a better, more experienced team than what we're used to. These girls are young. We go back to the changing room to see what each person has learned — if everyone has learned something, we have grown."

In the curtain-raiser, Arnett Gardens edged Los Perfectos 3-2. Shakira Douglas put the Junglists ahead in the second minute. Venecia Reid levelled for Los Perfectos 26 minutes later, but Douglas restored Arnett's lead in the 44th minute for a 2-1 half-time score. Tiana Shay Hamilton extended the advantage to 3-1 in the 78th minute before Reid pulled one back in the 89th, leaving Los Perfectos a goal behind going into leg two.

An Arnett Gardens official noted the squad had pushed through a difficult month. "About six females were going through a difficult period — it's not easy to get them going or keep them going, but we prevailed. We got a first-leg victory and we're looking to do better in the second leg."

Los Perfectos pointed to inexperience. "We have some young players and we made silly mistakes. We'll get it back together — I'm pretty sure they'll learn from this as well."

Both return legs are scheduled for Saturday at the same venue.
