St James, Jamaica: Granville Protest Erupts – Residents in Granville, St James, mounted fiery protests on Sunday following the fatal police shooting of community resident Latoya Bulgin during an incident involving a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Several roads throughout the community were blocked as angry residents used trees, discarded appliances, and other debris to barricade intersections. Fires were also set along sections of the roadway, prompting emergency response teams to move in to restore access.
Personnel from the JCF, supported by members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, were seen attempting to clear the affected areas amid heightened tensions in the community.
The incident that triggered the unrest reportedly occurred while Bulgin was transporting individuals to a protest in the area. CCTV footage circulating online captured the moment she was shot while seated in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Voxy in the Granville square.
Bulgin was later taken to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The fatal police shooting has sparked outrage among residents, many of whom have demanded accountability and answers surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
In response, the Police High Command confirmed that the JCF member involved has been placed on interdiction pending the outcome of investigations.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), along with the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB), has launched separate probes into the shooting.
A strong police presence remains in sections of Granville as authorities monitor the situation and work to maintain order.
