KSAMC steps up downtown Kingston clean-up to improve sanitation and traffic flow

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation is increasing work in downtown Kingston to improve public sanitation and reduce congestion under its Cleaner Kingston initiative, Mayor Andrew Swaby says.

On Sunday, the municipal authority carried out a major clean-up along Haywood Street, where crews cleared clogged drains and removed debris and discarded material from the roadway. The work also extended to areas along the roadside and in Queen’s Market.

Vendors who operate in the area welcomed the exercise, which the mayor said followed advance notice from the KSAMC. According to Swaby, the corporation had told vendors on Haywood Street about a month earlier that the clean-up team would be coming in.

He said the operation formed part of the wider Cleaner Kingston programme, with the KSAMC washing sections of the area, taking away junk, cutting away material along the road, and opening drains that had become blocked.

Swaby said sanitation remains a major priority for the municipal corporation, adding that the health of vendors and shoppers is also an important concern as the city pushes to improve conditions in downtown Kingston.
