After nine months of Red Stripe Premier Jamaica Premier League football marked by uncertainty, the season will be decided on Sunday when defending champions Cavalier face Portmore United in the grand final.

The title match brings together the last two clubs standing after 39 regular-season fixtures and four playoff contests. For Cavalier, the occasion is familiar: they are appearing in a fourth consecutive final and have won two championships during that run.

Cavalier technical director Rudolph Speid said Portmore would demand proper preparation. He described Portmore as an interesting opponent and said Cavalier would use the time before the final to settle on their approach.

There is no obvious favourite heading into the game. Portmore may also draw encouragement from the fact that Speid, along with leading players Christopher Ainsworth and Jeovani Leng, will be away on national duty and absent from the Cavalier set-up.

Speid, however, said Cavalier's strength is not built around single individuals. "When we lose we lose together. When we win we win together," he said, adding that the club has developed a winning mentality through its training environment.

Portmore are back in the final for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign, when they defeated Waterhouse to lift the trophy. They also enter Sunday's match unbeaten against Cavalier this season, having recorded two wins and a draw.

Portmore head coach Rudolph Austin said his team does not concern itself with choosing opponents and instead focuses on competing for the result. He also brushed aside outside opinions about the team, saying he has long avoided being distracted by public commentary.

Austin said the task in the final is straightforward: play with sense, compete fully and try to win at all costs.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The curtain-raiser at the same venue will be the third-place playoff between Montego Bay United and Mount Pleasant, with a place in the CONCACAF Caribbean Club Shield at stake.
