CVM’s midday newscast on Friday, May 22, 2026, led with two fatal motorcycle incidents in Westmoreland, including a double collision near Little London and a separate crash in Petersfield involving a cow on the roadway.

Police said 25-year-old D’Angelo Brown of Darling Street died in hospital after the Wednesday morning double motorcycle crash. Two other injured persons were admitted in critical condition. In Petersfield, 18-year-old Vinardo Whitlock of Longwood District in Whitehorn also died after his motorcycle hit a cow. Residents said stray animals have repeatedly created danger on that road and called for negligent owners to be investigated and prosecuted.

In Hanover, residents, beach users and tourists confronted persons fencing sections of the Orchid bathing beach in Hopewell. The residents said the property had been left for community use more than 50 years ago. Hopewell Citizens’ Association President Derek Wright said documents dating back to 1959 supported the community’s claim, while the Hanover Municipal Corporation was expected to visit the site.

Government ministers also responded to criticism of hurricane relief donations after an audit found that only $26 million of $1.4 billion had been spent. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie dismissed the backlash as mischief, while Finance Minister Fayval Williams said the funds were intended mainly for housing materials and modular-home support.

McKenzie further defended the proposed One Road Authority, saying it would help local government maintain the country’s road network. In Negril, tourism stakeholders said lessons from hurricanes Beryl and Melissa had pushed operators to strengthen properties, secure generators and improve backup supplies.

The bulletin also reported that BITU-represented workers at the Jamaica Teachers’ Association were pressing for outstanding pay adjustments and wage talks. In Trelawny, Falmouth officials said notices were being served over derelict vehicles and dumping near Foreshore Road, while the 20th Caribbean Week of Agriculture was launched for September 27 to October 2 with a focus on food security, agribusiness, climate-smart methods and exports.

Overseas, the newscast reported unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo after protesters set fire to Ebola treatment tents during anger over safe-burial rules.
