Spain has pledged to maintain its investment presence in Jamaica, with the Spanish ambassador making that commitment at a ceremony marking 25 years of the RIU hotel brand on the island.

The anniversary event brought together long-serving staff and national leaders to reflect on tourism's economic contribution and the wider pressures facing the labour market.

Nadia Forrester, who has worked with RIU for as long as the chain has operated in Jamaica, said the occasion left her feeling deeply valued. "It feels overwhelming. I feel appreciated by the company and I have dedicated many years to the company and tonight I feel very, very appreciated," she said.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness noted that Jamaica is competing not only for visitors and investment but also for talent. "And Jamaica must position itself not only as a net exporter of talent, which we have been for almost 200 years, but we need to now position ourselves to be receivers of talent into our economy if our economy is to grow and expand," he said.

Joan Trian Riu, managing director of Riu Hotels and Resorts, said the group has worked to strengthen its local footprint. Over the past five years, she said RIU contributed more than J$14.3 billion in social security payments and taxes, paid J$12 billion in salaries, and spent roughly J$66 billion with Jamaican suppliers.

Spanish companies have expanded their stake in Jamaica over the past quarter century, following RIU's lead and helping to make Spain one of the island's most dependable sources of foreign investment, speakers at the event said.

RIU opened its first Jamaican resort in Negril in 2001. The chain now operates seven properties across the country.
