Ewarton man gets $700,000 bail in nephew's fatal World Cup TV stabbing case

A St Catherine resident accused of killing his nephew in a dispute over how loud a World Cup football match was playing on television has been released on bail set at $700,000.

Chad Campbell, who lives on Bowie Road in Ewarton, St Catherine, secured the bond when he appeared before Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne on Thursday. He faces a murder charge in connection with the death of 23-year-old Lamar Mullings, an unemployed man from the same Bowie Road address.

Campbell's attorney, Donahue Martin, argued successfully for bail. He told the court that self-defence remains a central issue in the matter and that his client has a stable address to which he can move.

Judge Alleyne approved bail on several conditions. Campbell must report to the Lawrence Tavern Police Station twice each week, avoid Ewarton, and have no contact with anyone listed as a witness in the case. He is due back in court on September 18, when the matter will be mentioned again.

Police allegations state that around 8 p.m. on June 17, Campbell was watching a World Cup match on television when Mullings is said to have asked him to lower the volume. Officers say Campbell declined, and the exchange grew into a physical fight during which Mullings was allegedly stabbed in the upper body.

Mullings was rushed to Linstead Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Campbell was taken into custody the same night on suspicion of murder and was later formally charged after police completed their inquiries.
