Jamaica forum calls for stronger action on childhood cancer care

Jamaica’s 2026 Annual Childhood Cancer Forum placed childhood cancer in the spotlight as both a health issue and a question of fairness, calling for a more organised national response to children diagnosed with the disease.

Speakers at the forum said the country must move beyond awareness and focus on practical steps that improve care. The stated aim is to ensure that every child in Jamaica who has cancer can receive prompt diagnosis, proper treatment and compassionate support, no matter where the child lives or the family’s financial position.

One speaker said the forum was especially important because Jamaica has already made progress, but still needs stronger collaboration and better outcomes for young patients. The speaker said the expectation was that, after the current challenges were openly discussed, the meeting would lead to meaningful improvements for children battling cancer.

The forum’s message was that Jamaica should take a leading role at this stage, with coordinated action focused on equity, access and better survival prospects for children with cancer.
