Health Ministry urges protection against effects of Sahara Dust
With a wave of the Sahara Dust currently affecting Jamaica, the Ministry of Health & Wellness is reminding members of the public to reduce their exposure to the dust.
The Ministry says excess exposure to the dust particles can have severe health effects, including increased risk of respiratory and related illness, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and respiratory infection and allergies.
Prolonged exposure can result in skin and eye irritation the dust can affect water quality.
Members of the public, especially persons who are already experiencing or who are prone to respiratory illnesses, should exercise great care.
Among the measures being recommended are staying indoors as much as possible, the wearing of face masks and long sleeve clothing.
The health ministry is encouraging regular washing of hands, treatment of harvested water, and proper storage of water for domestic purposes, including drinking and food preparation.
