Mandela Highway westbound lane back in service after deadly Caymanas shooting

Motorists travelling out of the capital can once again use the westbound carriageway of the Mandela Highway, with police confirming that the route towards Spanish Town and Portmore is back in operation after being closed for a fatal shooting investigation.

Investigators had sealed off the westbound lane on Friday morning following gunfire that left one man dead and a second person nursing injuries.

According to the police account, the shooting unfolded around 7:15 am as a Ford Transit truck was making its way west along the corridor and approached the turnoff at Caymanas.

Shortly after the truck pulled to a halt, two men aboard a motorcycle drew up on the passenger side of the vehicle and discharged several rounds through the front passenger window and the windshield, lawmen said.

Two people inside the truck were hit and taken for emergency medical care. One of them was declared dead at hospital, while the second was admitted for further treatment.
