Frankfield Residents March for Justice After Elderly Woman Hyacinth Johnson Killed in Clarendon
Dozens of residents from Frankfield in Clarendon marched in protest against the suspected rape and killing of 64-year-old Hyacinth Johnson, widely known in the district as Miss June.
Clad in red and carrying handwritten placards, marchers moved from Union, where she lived, to Grantham. Calls for justice rang through the quiet farming community as neighbours turned their grief into public action.
The peace in the area was broken last Wednesday when police found Miss June's body. She lived alone and was described as a devout Christian. Neighbours last saw her alive less than 24 hours before the discovery. Church members grew concerned after she missed Tuesday night's prayer service and alerted authorities.
Officers found her nude with several stab wounds to her upper body. Deputy Superintendent Kevin Brown said investigators strongly suspect whoever carried out the attack is familiar with the community. He urged anyone who saw anything unusual to cooperate with the police.
Brown said two people were initially taken in for questioning but investigators found insufficient evidence to link them to the crime. A third person has since been placed in custody. He asked residents to allow the police to complete their work, while noting that being held does not mean someone is guilty.
The community has refused to let Miss June's death pass quietly. Residents described her as helpful, kind, and spirited. Organisers said the placards were not only for her, but for every woman who deserves to live without fear.
"It can happen to any one of us. It can be any one of us doorstep. So, we have come together to prevent it from coming over doorstep," one resident said.
