Government challenged over debt argument and fiscal responsibility in Parliament

A speaker in Parliament has challenged the Government’s current defence of its fiscal position, saying it cannot now justify a drawdown linked to disaster conditions after objecting to a similar approach in earlier years.

The speaker said a Government member from Northeast Central had argued that the country’s present ability to act was the result of fiscal responsibility and the improved position of Jamaica’s public finances. The point, however, was rejected as inconsistent when compared with the administration’s earlier stance.

According to the speaker, Jamaica’s debt-to-GDP ratio stood above 140 per cent at the time of the previous debate, while the figure is now below 100 per cent. The speaker questioned why the same action was described as reckless when debt was higher, but is now being presented as responsible because the debt ratio has fallen.

The address also pushed back against any suggestion that the present situation is only connected to Melissa. The speaker noted that Melissa occurred in 2025, while the issue being discussed had been unfolding since 2016.

The Government was accused of trying to return to Parliament without addressing earlier remarks that the speaker described as tribal and unpatriotic. The speaker said those statements had put Jamaica in a difficult position and forced efforts to rebuild the country’s reputation.

The argument ended with a charge that the Government should not be allowed to set aside its previous position and recast the same course of action as fiscal responsibility.
