Sports Minister Olivia Grange says the planned overhaul of the National Stadium is being fast-tracked, with the Government now aiming to complete the redevelopment in roughly two-and-a-half years or possibly sooner.

Grange said the original schedule had put the major works across a three-year window, but that timeline has since been reduced. She said the objective is to move the project along quickly while limiting disruption to the sporting and other programmes normally staged at the venue each year.

The work is also being discussed against the backdrop of Jamaica’s joint bid with the United States, Mexico and Costa Rica to co-host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Asked about the stadium’s readiness for that tournament, Grange gave a clear assurance: “It will be ready for the FIFA World Cup, women’s World Cup competition.”

The minister said further information on the redevelopment is expected shortly. According to Grange, the architectural planning is now well advanced, and she intends to present the drawings for the facility when she makes her sectoral presentation in Parliament.

She also said the project will include improvements to the Stadium East facility. Additional parking is also being planned through the construction of tiered parking structures.
