The Government has approved $60 million to stock hurricane shelters with cots, blankets and other essential items.
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie outlined the provision in Parliament today as he delivered his Sectoral Debate presentation. He also reported on plans to move Westmoreland shelterees into other accommodation.
Those residents have been staying at a school since Hurricane Melissa affected the island last October, and efforts to relocate them have faced repeated difficulties. McKenzie said work has advanced on the new shelter arrangement, with foundations completed for 10 of the 16 modular container units.
The minister said the administration is pressing ahead with purpose-built hurricane shelters in four selected parishes.
McKenzie also told Parliament that $70 million has been assigned to drain-clearing work, aimed at reducing the effects of severe weather during the current Atlantic hurricane season.
