Grass, not goat on the menu England fan who lost World Cup bet blames coach’s bad decisions

2 min read

So confident was William ‘Seak’ Black that England would beat defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, that he made a daring bet to eat grass if the South Americans triumphed.

And when Anthony Gordon gave England – known as the Three Lions – the lead in the second half, Black must have felt that the only thing on the menu was ‘goat’, a reference to Argentina captain and talisman Lionel Messi who is considered the ‘greatest of all time’ (GOAT). But Messi and his teammates had other ideas for Black’s meal. Argentina pushed for an equaliser, and the pressure eventually led to Enzo Fernandez scoring in the 85th minute. Lautaro Marinez then headed in the winning goal two minutes into injury time. Both goals were assisted by Messi.

After Fernandez’s equaliser, Black admitted that he realised he would be eating grass.

“I was very confident that England should win and we should not have lost that game because we have full control in the first half. When the second half started, we just parked the bus and the coach made some terrible changes. As soon as Argentina score their first goal, I knew we got knocked,” Black said.

He said he has been a fan of English football since he was a youngster so it is only natural for him to be a huge England fan.

“I grow up on English football and always admire their style of playing football. I didn’t know much about World Cup, but from 2014, I realised that England has a team and some of the players that I was familiar with from [the English] Premier League were on the team,” she said.

With the South Americans coming back to win, all eyes were now on Black, and what he would be putting, if anything, in his plate. Proving to be a man of his word, the 28-year-old uploaded a video of him chewing on mouthfuls of grass, garnished with ketchup, much to the delight of Argentina’s supporters.

“I am a very spontaneous person so I wasn’t afraid of the challenge. I don’t know the name of the grass that I ate, but I knew that it came from inside of a park. I put some ketchup on it and just started to eat. I can’t really describe the taste, but it has a fresh and salty taste all at once,” he said.

Once the final whistle went, condemning him to his grassy meal, Black said his phone has been receiving messages non-stop.

“When my side lost, my phone freeze the way people were reaching out to me. My phone was blowing up and my social media inbox was full. Some of my friends were laughing at me and I understand because mi lose big time,” Black added between laughter.
