Security guard charged after CCTV allegedly shows him taking $2M from ATM vault

1 min readSt. Andrew

A security guard who serviced an automated teller machine has been charged with larceny after investigators say surveillance footage captured him taking more than two million dollars from the unit.

Terrance Austin, 55, of Kintyre Road, Kingston 6, is accused of removing $2,045,300 from the ATM while performing duties that included clearing the machine and its cheque deposit vault.

Police reports indicate that a financial institution noticed irregularities in its records and found that funds had gone missing between January and May of this year. Representatives of the security firm contracted to maintain the site were notified, and an internal investigation followed.

That inquiry reportedly pointed to Austin. Investigators say cameras inside the ATM enclosure recorded the alleged theft.

The case was brought to the attention of the police on June 11. Austin was taken into custody and, on June 16, was formally charged with larceny as a servant after giving a caution statement with his attorney present.

Authorities said his first court appearance is still being arranged.
