Guardsman worker Damion Walters dies after May garage blaze

Damion Walters, a 43-year-old Guardsman Group worker who suffered critical injuries in a major fire at the firm's garage compound in May, has died while receiving care at a specialised burn facility in the United States.

Walters was among three people seriously hurt when the May 27 blaze erupted during mechanical work at the compound. The flames advanced quickly, drawing an emergency response that eventually contained the fire.

The day after the incident, Walters was flown to the Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, under arrangements involving local and international partners. He continued specialised care there but died on Monday.

In a company statement, Guardsman Group said his death has left relatives, friends and co-workers grief-stricken. Executive Chairman Kenneth Benjamin said the firm had held out hope for Walters throughout his treatment.

"This is a heartbreaking day for Damion's family and for all of us who knew him. From the moment the incident occurred, our focus was on giving him every possible chance of recovery. Today, our hearts are with his loved ones, and we pray they find strength and comfort in the days ahead," Benjamin said.

Deputy Executive Chairman Nicholas Benjamin likewise offered condolences to the family, saying the company was deeply saddened after clinging to hope during Walters' care. He noted that the other two injured workers are recovering well and are expected to return to Jamaica in the coming weeks.

Guardsman Group also expressed thanks to emergency responders, the Burn Foundation of Jamaica, medical staff, aviation partners and all who helped with Walters' overseas transfer and treatment.
