Hanover driver fined $165,000 after St Mary ganja seizure

St. Mary

Kelvin Patrick Esteen, a 46-year-old Hanover resident, has been ordered by the St Mary Parish Court to pay $165,000 after admitting to two ganja-related offences.

Esteen was before the court today on charges of possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, and trafficking in ganja. He entered guilty pleas to possession and dealing, attracting penalties of $15,000 and $150,000.

The case arose from Tuesday, May 26, when police working a national coordinated roadblock on the Cambridge main road in St Mary stopped the motor vehicle Esteen was driving. Investigators said a search uncovered about five and a half pounds of ganja hidden in several sections of the vehicle, with most of it placed inside the rim of the spare tyre underneath the car. He was charged after further investigations.

Following the court matter, St Mary Police Division head Anthony Wallace said the police will continue targeting the movement and sale of illegal drugs and other unlawful activity through intelligence-led operations, strategic road policing and proactive enforcement to help keep communities safe.
