Harbour View teen in coma after stabbing while breaking up domestic fight
A 13-year-old Excelsior High School student remains in a coma at Kingston Public Hospital after she was stabbed while trying to stop a violent domestic dispute at Bayshore Park, near Harbour View in St. Andrew, on Saturday night.
Doctors are preparing for another major surgery to save her life. Her mother, Josephine Mitchell, is urgently asking the public for blood donations and expensive medical items needed for the procedure.
The incident happened shortly after 10:00 p.m. on May 9, when Kemar Mitchell — identified by relatives as the father of the injured girl's cousin's child — allegedly went to the family home and attacked the mother of his child during a heated confrontation. Relatives said a restraining order had previously been taken out against him over alleged abusive behaviour toward the woman.
In the struggle, Kemelia Paul and another relative reportedly moved in to separate the pair. "My daughter and another relative tried to part the fight and push him off," Mitchell said on Tuesday. She said she felt a sudden impact and soon realised her child had been stabbed. The teenager collapsed moments later as blood poured from the wound.
The suspect then allegedly tried to continue attacking one of the relatives with the same knife before fleeing. Residents chased him, but he escaped. Police say they have intensified efforts to find him.
Since the attack, Kemelia has stayed hospitalised, unconscious and in critical condition. "She hasn't spoken since," Mitchell said, her voice trembling. "She can't eat. She just lying there."
Doctors performed emergency surgery on Sunday after finding severe internal bleeding. Further scans later showed extensive damage to her liver, and staff scheduled another urgent operation. Mitchell said she has been told to source specialized surgical supplies, including an endo jay handle, vascular reloads, and a legal sure handle, which she cannot afford on her own. "The first surgery was to stop the bleeding," she explained. "After the CT scan, they realized the left side of her liver is bad." She has about $70,000 available, while one device alone costs close to $100,000. "It's life and death now," she said quietly.
Relatives describe Kemelia as cheerful and respectful. Mitchell, a mother of three, said her firstborn had recently passed exams for the school of her choice. Instead of attending classes this week, the family has been at her bedside praying for improvement.
Police said their investigations are continuing. Anyone willing to assist Josephine Mitchell can contact her at 876-590-7998.
