Peter ‘Maestro’ Heslop Marks 45 Years Across Jamaican Education and Theatre

St. Andrew

Peter ‘Maestro’ Heslop has spent more than 40 years pouring his energy into young talent, education, performance and Jamaica’s creative life. Across roughly 45 years, he has served as teacher, guide, entertainer and community-minded cultural worker, affecting many students and artistes along the way.

Speaking with The Gleaner, Heslop said the urge to teach and motivate others was present from early in his life. He explained that teaching became a true calling for him, one he embraced fully and found deeply rewarding. As a boy, he said, younger children often came to him for help, making the role feel natural long before he entered a formal classroom.

Heslop said that sense of ease made teaching an obvious path for him. Before the wider entertainment world came to know him as the ‘Maestro’, he was already earning respect as an educator, spending more than two decades in schools.

His teaching journey began at Kingston College, where he used the performing arts to help build discipline, confidence, creativity and personal growth. He later taught at Tivoli Gardens High School, continuing work that would influence many young Jamaicans.

Several of his former students later became well-known names in music, among them dancehall acts Ghost, Culture and Lukie D. Heslop remembers them warmly from his Tivoli Gardens High days.

He said Ghost and Culture were in second form when he began working with them, and he later helped take them to Sunsplash, where, according to him, they became the first artistes to perform there without having released recordings. He also praised Lukie D’s early ability, saying all three showed talent from the start.

Heslop said he now sees the former students as colleagues, and remains grateful that teaching allowed him to play a part in their development.

After many years helping others refine their gifts and performing for audiences locally and overseas, Heslop is again stepping before the public in a new stage production. In Brazen To Di Bone, he appears alongside Christopher ‘Johnny’ Daley, Donald ‘Slashe’ Anderson and Joan ‘Kenzie’ McKenzie in a comedy being positioned as a major summer show.

Heslop said the cast has committed fully to the production, praising the script, the director and the performers. He added that he is looking forward to presenting the work to Jamaicans.

For Heslop, the show adds another stop to a long career spanning music, education and theatre. His path has allowed him to touch several generations, both within the school system and on the stage.

Brazen To Di Bone is scheduled to open June 5 at The Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston.
