13-Year-Old Kemelia Paul Dies After Weeks-Long Battle Following Stabbing

St. Andrew

The nation is mourning the loss of 13-year-old Excelsior High School student Kemelia Paul, who died on Tuesday, one month after she was stabbed while trying to intervene in a fight at her family’s home in Bayshore Park, Harbour View, St Andrew.

Her mother, Josephine Mitchell, confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that doctors had informed her earlier in the day that Kemelia had developed an infection while undergoing treatment. Hours later, the family received the devastating confirmation that the teenager had passed away.

Kemelia had been fighting for her life since May 9, when she sustained severe injuries during the incident. The seventh-grade student remained hospitalised for weeks, spending time in critical condition and in a coma as doctors worked to save her life.

Her ordeal touched people across Jamaica and beyond, prompting an overwhelming wave of support. Well-wishers donated blood, offered financial assistance, and helped source medical supplies needed for her care. The case also drew national attention, with Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton reaching out to the family during her recovery.

In recent weeks, relatives and supporters had become encouraged by signs of progress after Kemelia regained consciousness and began showing improvement. Her sudden passing has therefore come as a profound shock to those who had remained hopeful for her recovery.

Meanwhile, legal proceedings related to the case are continuing. Police have charged 29-year-old Kemar Mitchell in connection with the stabbing after he turned himself in to authorities. He is expected to appear before the court on Wednesday.

As news of Kemelia’s death spreads, grief is being felt throughout the Excelsior High School community, where counselling services are expected to be made available to students and staff coping with the tragedy.

Her death has left a family devastated, a school community in mourning, and a nation saddened by the loss of a young life that inspired so many during her courageous fight to survive.
