Chiney K ready for her next act

For many actors, the premiere of their debut feature film is a moment of celebration. For Chiney K, it was something much deeper — a quiet confirmation that she was exactly where she is meant to be.

As the lights dimmed inside the packed cinema for the premiere of Stew Peas, the media personality and content creator found herself fighting back tears. The title appeared on the screen, and with it came the realization that years of preparation, faith, and persistence had culminated in one unforgettable moment.

“I thought, ‘Wow! This is it,’ “ she recalled. “I had tears down my face.”

Watching the film for the first time alongside an audience made the experience even more surreal. Rather than seeing herself on screen, she watched her character, Detective Tessa Riley, come to life.

“I didn’t see Kerry,” she said, referring to her given name. “I saw Tessa Riley.”

That distinction is perhaps the clearest sign of what Stew Peas has already given her — not just a leading role, but the confidence to fully embrace acting as more than a passion.

Long before stepping onto the red carpet, Chiney K had quietly laid the groundwork for this chapter. A graduate in media studies with a minor in film studies, she had studied acting and always loved performance, but had never challenged herself with a feature film of this scale.

Now, everything has changed.

“I discovered that I really can do this,” she said. “The experience gave me confidence in my abilities and showed me that I can fully step into a character, trust the process, and hold my own alongside such a talented cast.”

It is a realisation that has reshaped her ambitions.

Stew Peas reignited a dream she had allowed to sit quietly in the background. Instead of viewing acting as an occasional opportunity, she now sees it as a central part of her future.

Going forward, audition rooms, casting calls, and new film roles are firmly on her agenda.

“This experience reminded me why I fell in love with acting in the first place,” she said. “It reignited that passion and made me want to pursue it more intentionally.”

She has no plans to abandon the media career that made her a household name, but envisions both careers existing side by side, united by a shared purpose — storytelling.

“I’m a character regardless, so why not both?” she said with a laugh.

Whether she’s behind a microphone or in front of a camera, she believes both spaces allow her to connect with audiences in meaningful ways.

“This experience has reminded me to trust the journey and trust that God has a bigger plan for me than I can even imagine,” she added.

As audiences leave Stew Peas, Chiney K hopes they leave celebrating more than her performance. She hopes they recognise the growing strength of Jamaica’s film industry and the power of authentic local storytelling.

“I want people to leave saying, ‘Jamaicans did that!’ “

For her, Stew Peas is not the destination, it is the opening scene of a much bigger story — one she’s finally ready to tell.
