ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Proceedings in the murder case involving a St Catherine man accused of killing his elderly mother have been put on hold after the court was told that an interpreter is required before the matter can continue.
Paulo Grant, 53, appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court on Tuesday to answer to charges stemming from the death of his mother, 80-year-old Jasmine Grant, popularly known as “Sister Grant.” During the hearing, his attorney informed the court that Grant, who previously resided in France, has limited English proficiency and is unable to effectively participate in the proceedings without translation assistance.
The court also received information indicating that Grant has been assessed by medical professionals and deemed fit to enter a plea. Prosecutors further stated that he had been receiving outpatient treatment for mental health issues and had been living under the care of his mother before the incident.
In light of the language concerns, the matter was adjourned until June 2 to allow time for an interpreter to be secured.
Grant is accused of killing his mother at the home they shared in the Cheesefield community of St Catherine. Reports indicate that the elderly woman’s body was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition and showed signs of multiple injuries.
Investigators said concern arose after members of the victim’s church were unable to reach her by phone. The group later visited the residence, where they discovered her body and contacted the police.
Following investigations, Grant was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder after participating in an interview with detectives.
The case is expected to resume once arrangements have been made to facilitate interpretation services and other court requirements.
