Lennox Lewis League of Champions Foundation to Host 10th Annual Sports Summer Camp

HANOVER, Jamaica — The Lennox Lewis League of Champions Foundation will host its 10th Annual Sports Summer Camp and Mentorship Programme at the Hopewell Sports and Community Centre in Orchard, Hopewell, Hanover, throughout the month of July.

According to Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Lennox Lewis League of Champions Foundation, Violet Chang-Lewis, the summer camp, now in its 10th year, will feature four separate camps as part of this year’s summer activities.

Chang-Lewis said the programme will officially begin on July 6 with the Boxing Summer Camp. It will be followed by the Football Camp, Wrestling Camp, Basketball Camp and will culminate with the Art and Craft Discovery Camp.

She further explained that participants will benefit from instruction by a team of experienced trainers, including former Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis, who will teach the fundamentals of boxing and defensive boxing. Educators will also conduct sessions in arts and crafts, personal discipline and character development.

All camps are free of cost and are open to children and teenagers between the ages of 8 and 18.

The Lennox Lewis League of Champions Foundation Summer Camp not only serves children from communities across Hanover but also welcomes participants from neighbouring parishes throughout western Jamaica.

Speaking with our news team, retired Undisputed World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Lennox Lewis shared his vision for the annual programme.

Lewis, who co-founded the Lennox Lewis League of Champions Foundation alongside his wife, Violet Chang-Lewis, MSW, and its signature Knights in the Ring Initiative, said it has always been his dream to use the sport of boxing to uplift young people and equip them with the discipline, focus and life skills that helped shape his own life and career

The former world champion, who dominated the heavyweight division for more than two decades, said boxing transformed his life and believes the sport can have a similarly positive impact on the lives of children who attend the summer camp.

Lewis also expressed gratitude to the World Boxing Council (WBC) for its support in helping to make the annual summer camp a reality.

Parents and guardians from Hopewell and surrounding communities said they are grateful to the Lewis family for their commitment over the past decade to investing in the lives of young people through sports, mentorship and personal development.

According to several parents, since the launch of the Lennox Lewis League of Champions Foundation Summer Camp at the Orchard Community Centre, their children have benefited in countless ways, developing greater confidence, discipline and life skills.

They are encouraging other parents to register their children for this year’s staging of the programme, noting that the camp is free of cost and promises to be the biggest and best edition yet.
