Twenty-eight-year-old Lavar Braham of Trainline, Gregory Park, Portmore, has been sentenced to more than 14 years in prison after being convicted of brutally attacking his former partner in 2022.
Braham was sentenced by Justice Yvonne Brown in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Friday to 14 years and seven months’ imprisonment for assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent.
He also received a sentence of three years, two months and 28 days for choking with intent. The sentences are to run concurrently.
The court heard that the incident occurred in September 2022 after the couple’s intimate relationship deteriorated.
Prosecutors said Braham attacked the woman, beating and choking her until she lost consciousness. He then allegedly poured alcohol over her body and set her on fire, leaving her with severe injuries that required extensive hospital treatment.
Following an investigation by detectives assigned to the Portmore Police, Braham was arrested and subsequently charged after participating in a question-and-answer session with investigators.
