PORTMORE STAKES: Dream Catcher’s to lose

The $3-million Portmore Stakes takes centre stage at Caymanas Park on Sunday, May 10 — the final major prep on the ‘Road to the Triple Crown’ for native-bred fillies. A field of 10 faces the starter in the Graded Stakes event over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m).

The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide breaks down each runner and their chances.

1. DREAM CATCHER: (3 b f by Bern Identity – Double Jeopardy) – Morning line favourite.
Dream Catcher became the leading contender heading into the Classics after a 2 ¼-length win in the Thornbird Stakes over 7 furlongs on April 11. She’s been training well and facing practically the same rivals. If she runs back, she wins again.

2. TAYLOR MADE: (3 gr f by Aveenu Malcainu – Another Fury) – Stamina questions after the Thornbird. Taylor Made led early but weakened in deep stretch to finish fourth. With an extra half-furlong here, she’s likely to falter again.

3. ONE IANZHA LINKS: (3 b f by Casual Trick – Nippit) – Should continue to struggle among this level.

4. PASSION AND BEYOND: (3 b f by Savoy Stomp – Above and Beyond) – Well-bred and dangerous. She was an easy 3-length winner over 7 furlongs on April 6.
Passion and Beyond will appreciate the extra journey and, given her class and talent, she’s one of the main contenders.

5. VICTORIOUS LINKS: (3 b f by Western Warrior – Victory Turn) – Not expected to win.

6. SKY IS THE LIMIT: (3 ch f by Bern Identity – Ransomewars) – Can’t trust her to finish straight. Was drifting out when leading last time. If she can’t keep a line for 7 ½ furlongs, she’s done.

7. PIPPA: (3 b f by Fearless Vision – Anabama Slama) – Made an encouraging debut on March 21 when winning over 6 furlongs in 1:15.3. Pippa is bred to get a distance of ground and is expected to make a bold bid for top honours here.

8. ANOTHER WOW: (3 b f by Casual Trick – Sarah Barracuda) – Went down fighting in the Thornbird Stakes, finishing second by 2 ¼ lengths behind Dream Catcher. Another Wow should have no problem at this distance and is expected to put up another fight.

9. ALIYA’S WILL: (3 ch f by Hedge Fund – Crème De La) – No chance.

10. LEXI LOU: (3 b f by Aveenu Malcainu – Herroyalhighness) – Can run on for a piece without threatening to win. Might grab 4th-5th if the top ones falter.
