ROOFS Phase Two To Pay Verified Beneficiaries Through Direct Cash Transfers

Government is moving the ROOFS housing support scheme into a second stage that will pay approved beneficiaries directly in cash. Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jnr announced the change today during his sectoral debate presentation in Parliament.
The Restoration of Owner or Occupant Family Shelters programme was created after Hurricane Melissa damaged homes last October, with the aim of helping residents repair and rebuild. Charles Jnr said 43,000 people have now been verified for assistance.
The scheme has drawn complaints from beneficiaries who said they struggled to access support, while the Opposition People’s National Party has also raised criticism. Charles Jnr conceded that problems have affected the rollout, but said they are being dealt with as phase two begins.
