Two men were killed during a reported confrontation with police along the Lluidas Vale main road in St Catherine on Sunday evening, according to investigators.
Police reports indicate that around 6:05 p.m., officers intercepted a Honda Stream motor car while conducting an operation in the area. Investigators said the police were acting on intelligence suggesting that one of the occupants was being sought in connection with a quintuple murder committed in the Commodore district last year.
Authorities stated that after the vehicle was signalled to stop, officers exited their service unit and approached the car. Police allege that shortly after the engine was turned off, gunfire was reportedly directed at the officers from inside the vehicle.
The lawmen reportedly took cover and returned fire during the exchange. During the incident, three men allegedly escaped from the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes.
Following the reported shootout in St Catherine, police said checks were carried out and the two wounded men were found inside the vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot injuries.
Investigators also reported the seizure of two firearms along with ammunition during the operation.
The injured men were transported to Linstead Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting in St Catherine.
