St. James Police Ramp Up Traffic Enforcement

2 min readSt. James

The St. James Police will be stepping up traffic-enforcement activities during the summer period, targeted at unlicensed, uninsured and drunk driving and other breaches.
The objective is to ensure road safety and reduce fatalities.

Speaking in an interview with JIS News, Acting Operations Officer for St. James, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rodrick Reid, identified driving without proper documentation as among the most common infractions this time of the year.

He said that the police will be improving compliance and enforcement through traffic blitzes, highway patrols, and increased joint activities with agencies such as the Transport Authority.

DSP Reid urged motorists to ensure that they possess a valid driver’s licence and have adequate insurance coverage before operating a motor vehicle.

“Persons who want to operate motor vehicles must first ensure that they are qualified to do so,” he said.

He also identified impaired driving due to alcohol consumption as a major concern, noting that the summer holiday is often marked by an increase in social and entertainment events where alcohol is consumed.

He advised motorists to arrange for a designated driver when attending such events to safeguard themselves and other road users.

Additionally, DSP Reid said that public education initiatives will be conducted in communities across the parish to promote responsible road use and increase awareness of traffic regulations throughout the holiday period.

Head of the St James Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Eron Samuels, noted that while lighter traffic conditions are anticipated due to school closures, traffic personnel will continue to be deployed at key intersections during major entertainment events to maintain order and facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

He also reminded visitors travelling throughout the parish to exercise caution on the roads, noting that some may be unfamiliar with Jamaica’s road markings and left-hand traffic system.

“We want members of the public to know that it will be safe to move around St. James. We want them to have an experience that is safe and secure while travelling throughout the parish,” SSP Samuels said.

He noted that Montego Bay and St. James continue to experience increased activity and encouraged all road users to play their part in maintaining public safety by using the roadways responsibly.

“Use the roadways safely so that we can avoid unnecessary incidents and ensure everyone enjoys the holiday period,” he added.

In the meantime, SSP Samuels encouraged parents to ensure that children are adequately supervised, travel with responsible adults, and remain safe while enjoying the summer break.
