St. Kitts and Nevis defends refusal of entry to 17 Nigerians amid Ebola concerns

The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has defended its decision to deny entry to 17 Nigerian nationals who recently arrived in the federation on regional airline services, citing public health precautions linked to growing international concern over Ebola.

In a statement, government officials said the move followed guidance from health authorities and formed part of ongoing measures aimed at protecting public health.

According to officials, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified Nigeria as being at elevated risk for Ebola importation because of evolving conditions tied to outbreaks in parts of Africa and increased international travel through major transit hubs.

Authorities stressed that no confirmed Ebola case associated with the current outbreak has been reported in Nigeria. However, they said the advisory justified heightened vigilance and precautionary action by local officials.

The government emphasized that the federation maintains a longstanding and positive relationship with the people of Nigeria and expressed regret for any inconvenience or distress caused to those affected by the decision.

Officials said the health and safety of residents remain the administration’s highest priority and noted that all measures are being guided by established public health protocols.

The statement also underscored the importance of balancing caution with humane treatment, adding that affected individuals were to be treated “with dignity and respect.”

Members of the public were encouraged to cooperate with all public health regulations and border control measures currently in effect to support the country’s disease prevention efforts.

The government also expressed hope that the broader international health concern would soon be contained, allowing global travel and international engagement to continue under safer conditions.

The incident comes as several countries worldwide continue reviewing border health protocols and screening procedures in response to fears surrounding the possible spread of Ebola beyond affected regions in Africa.
