Stoppage-Time Own Goal Hands Montego Bay United Semi-Final Lead Over Cavalier

Montego Bay United moved within one match of the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) final on Sunday, beating defending champions Cavalier FC 1-0 in the opening leg of their semi-final at the National Stadium.

For the full 90 minutes the tie stayed goalless in a tight encounter. Montego Bay then seized the edge when Cavalier midfielder Adrian Reid Jr put the ball into his own net in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.

That scoreline leaves Xavier Gilbert’s Montego Bay side needing only a draw in Wednesday’s return leg at the same venue to reach Sunday’s final. There they would face either Concacaf Caribbean Cup holders Mount Pleasant Football Academy or Portmore United.

Cavalier, appearing in an eighth consecutive semi-final, must win the second leg outright to reach a fourth straight final. They are chasing a fourth consecutive JPL final appearance after lifting the last two league titles.

Sunday’s first leg played out as attack against defence. Montego Bay controlled the numbers, firing 18 shots to Cavalier’s one and keeping roughly 68 per cent of possession.

The St James club still had to work past Cavalier goalkeeper Jamari Gordon, who made a string of second-half stops. Among them was a denial of a long-range strike from Dwight Merrick that looked likely to beat him.

Rudolph Speid’s Cavalier side appeared headed for the second leg level. Montego Bay won a corner in the 93rd minute, and Reid Jr deflected the delivery into his own goal after it slipped through a crowded penalty area.
