West Indies women record second straight win

West Indies Women continued their impressive batting performance in the Evara Tri-Nation T20I Series, as they defeated Pakistan Women on May 29 by 25 runs to record their second straight win at Castle Avenue.

Captain Hayley Matthews laid the foundation with a superb innings, while valuable contributions from Jannillea Glasgow, Stafanie Taylor and Chinelle Henry helped the regional side amass 199 for six, the third-highest total in the team’s Women’s T20 International history.

In response, Pakistan struggled to keep up with the required run rate after a slow start to their chase. Although they mounted a late fightback, they were restricted to 174 for eight, falling 25 runs short of the target.

The victory came after the Windies’ recent convincing eight-wicket triumph over Ireland, and moved them to four points from two matches.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin provided a rapid start, adding 57 runs in the first five overs.

The opening pair attacked bowler Diana Baig early, helping the West Indies race to 41 without loss after three overs. However, Baig struck back by dismissing Matthews for a quick 40 off 20 balls, giving Pakistan an important breakthrough.

After the dismissal of Hayley Matthews, Nashra Sandhu bowled Deandra Dottin for 17, while Rameen Shamim removed Qiana Joseph for four, leaving the West Indies at 66 for three in the eight over.

Stafanie Taylor and Jahzara Claxton rebuilt the innings with a 54-run partnership, but Pakistan regained control when both batters were dismissed in quick succession, reducing the Windies to 122 for five.

The match then swung back in the West Indies’ favour as Jannillea Glasgow smashed 42 off 25 balls and Chinelle Henry blasted an unbeaten 33 off 17 deliveries in an aggressive 65-run stand that lifted the Windies to a strong total.

Glasgow’s late run-out came after the pair had already inflicted significant damage.

Shamim and Sandhu were Pakistan’s best bowlers, taking two wickets each.

In reply, Pakistan Women made a poor start, losing early wickets to Shawnisha Hector, who bowled Muneeda Ali for two and Player-of-the-Match Chinelle Henry who had Gull Feroza caught for four. Pakistan slipped to 12 for two while Henry also removed Ayesha Zafar for seven.

Spinner Ashmini Munisar then claimed the key wicket of Saira Jabeen for 30, leaving Pakistan struggling at 52 for four after six overs.
Their chase was further disrupted by two run-outs, Rameen Shamim (18) and Iram Javed (24).

The match seemed over for Pakistan Women when top scorer Aliya Riaz was dismissed for 37, leaving them at 139 for seven in the 17th over.

However, captain Fatima Sana kept the game alive with a rapid 27 off 14 balls, pushing the contest into the final stages.

West Indies Women were led with the ball by Player-of-the-Match Chinelle Henry, who took 2 for 13, while Shawnisha Hector also impressed with 2 for 21.
