A woman was shot and killed by police on Sunday afternoon in Granville, St. James, during a community protest held over the fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy one week earlier.

Police identified the deceased as Latoya Bulgin, also called Boojo. According to police reports, Bulgin became involved in an altercation with officers while the community was monitoring the protest. She was shot during the confrontation.

Residents had gathered to highlight the earlier incident, in which the teenager died in another shooting involving the police.

Marlene Malahoo Forte, Member of Parliament for St. James West Central, which includes the area, said the police commissioner must take immediate action regarding the officer in this case. She said she does not rush to conclusions and supports due process and a full investigation, but what she saw at the scene troubled her deeply.

"I'm not one to jump to hasty conclusion, and I do believe in process and investigation, but based on what I observed on the scene, the commissioner will have to take immediate action in relation to the officer in this matter," Malahoo Forte said.

She added that she cannot prejudge the matter, but from what she witnessed, "it doesn't look good."
