Holness Addresses National Unease After Latoya Bulgin Fatal Shooting In St James

Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says the fatal shooting of Latoya Bulgin in St James has stirred hurt, outrage and serious worry among people in Jamaica and overseas.

Speaking on the matter today, Holness said he had chosen not to respond earlier because, as prime minister, his comments must be carefully considered before being made public. He said Jamaicans at home and abroad had written and called on him to address Bulgin's death.

Holness extended sympathy to Bulgin's relatives, friends and wider community. He said Jamaica has an established process for independent scrutiny of state agents in cases where someone dies while they are carrying out official duties. The prime minister added that the state’s purpose is to safeguard and defend life.
