Hope and Greaves forge unbeaten stand as Windies reach 318-4 in Antigua Test

2 min read

Shai Hope and Justin Greaves both reached unbeaten half-centuries and combined for a 174-run stand as the West Indies fought back to 318 for four in the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

The regional side still trails Sri Lanka's first-innings total by 229 runs, but sits well placed to dodge the follow-on heading into the final day of the contest.

Resuming at 58 for one, John Campbell began the session in lively fashion alongside Kavem Hodge, striking aggressively and bringing up his fourth Test fifty. Campbell made 72 from 154 balls before falling to a big hit off Asitha Fernando, leaving the Windies at 122 for two after a useful partnership.

Prabath Jayasuriya then removed Amir Jangoo for nine and Hodge for 31, dragging the innings down to 144 for four.

Hope and Greaves stepped in to steady matters with an unbroken stand. Greaves weathered a tight run-out call early on. Hope, back from a shoulder injury, looked sharp and helped Greaves settle the West Indies innings.

At tea the score stood at 219 for four, with Hope on 38 not out and Greaves on 36 not out. After the break, Hope passed his seventh Test half-century, and Greaves soon followed with his second in the longest format.

Hope was dropped after edging a ball from Isitha Wijesundara, but the pair pressed on and took charge for the rest of the session. They moved close to centuries and posted the highest fifth-wicket partnership the West Indies have recorded against Sri Lanka in Test cricket.

Hope closed on 86 from 173 balls with nine fours, while Greaves was 85 not out off 162 with ten boundaries. For Sri Lanka, Fernando finished with two for 74 and Jayasuriya two for 77.
