Westmoreland Farmer Dies from Electrocution: Police in Westmoreland are investigating the death of a farmer who reportedly came into contact with live electrical wires while allegedly attempting to make an illegal connection to JPS power lines.
The deceased has been identified as Derek Brown, a man believed to be in his 60s from the New Works community in the parish.
Reports are that about 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Brown was at home with relatives when he went outside. Moments later, family members reportedly heard sounds resembling electrical sparks coming from outside the premises.
When checks were made, Brown was discovered lying motionless on his back with what appeared to be burn injuries to his left hand. Investigators also reportedly found electrical wires and a long piece of bamboo near the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest Brown may have been attempting to connect wires to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) power lines when he was electrocuted.
The death remains under investigation by the police.
