Jamaicans Highlight Swimming, Critical Thinking and Cooking as Essential Life Skills

Jamaicans have outlined a broad mix of abilities they believe people need to manage daily life safely and independently. Their suggestions ranged from swimming and critical thinking to helping others, showing respect, adapting to change, preparing meals and handling basic vehicle maintenance.

Swimming emerged repeatedly as a priority. Respondents said the skill could save someone who unexpectedly enters the water, whether through an accident or another person's actions. One participant recalled travelling abroad and being asked whether they could swim after saying they came from the Caribbean. The exchange prompted the view that Jamaicans should be comfortable in the water because the island is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and emergencies can occur.

Other responses focused on character and relationships. Helping people was presented as a valuable ability, while respect, good manners and love were described as qualities that can carry individuals further in life.

Adaptability was also recommended as a way to cope with present circumstances and future changes. Another participant urged Jamaicans to strengthen their critical-thinking abilities, arguing that people can sometimes react stubbornly instead of carefully considering a situation. Taking time to assess likely consequences before acting, the respondent suggested, could prevent avoidable difficulties.

Practical self-reliance was another recurring theme. One participant said owners should understand how to perform basic servicing on their possessions. For motorists, that includes knowing how to inspect coolant, engine oil and transmission-fluid levels, whether by using a dipstick or reading the vehicle's electronic system.

The participant warned that neglecting coolant can cause an engine to overheat, potentially leading to a rebuild or replacement. Allowing the oil supply to run out can also make the engine seize and create similarly costly damage. Learning these checks, the respondent said, could therefore save money.

Cooking completed the list of recommended skills. Young men who have always depended on their mothers for meals were specifically encouraged to learn, while the advice was also extended to both men and women.
