Jamaican Students Remaining In Cuba Are Staying By Choice, Johnson Smith Says

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith has said Jamaican students still in Cuba are remaining by choice.

Johnson Smith gave the update earlier today during the media briefing held after Cabinet met at Jamaica House. Questions have been raised about the welfare of Jamaican students in Cuba as the island struggles with serious fuel and infrastructure problems.

The conditions have been made worse by tougher United States sanctions, which have added pressure to the humanitarian situation. Johnson Smith said the Government has accepted that it will help the students leave Cuba if they wish to depart.
