Montego Bay landfill fire nearly out after NSWMA and fire brigade response
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says a blaze at the tipping area of the Retirement Disposal Site in Montego Bay, St. James, has been contained and should be fully put out today.
Authorities suspect the fire began after a waste collection truck delivered material to the site on Wednesday. Workers raised the alarm and quickly informed the site supervisor, which allowed crews to respond without delay.
NSWMA Executive Director Audley Gordon told Irie FM News that about 80% of the fire had already been extinguished. Gordon said strong winds in the area had helped carry the smoke over a wider distance.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade reported that heavy machinery, trucks, and soil were used to cover the affected section of the site. It added that considerable work was carried out the day before, and residents and businesses in the area should notice a clear drop in smoke nuisance today.
