Okeffe Somers, a 25-year-old labourer from March Pen Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, was killed in a police shooting at a Jobs Lane premises in the early hours of Sunday.

Investigators have identified Somers, who was also called 'Briss,' as the man who died during the incident.

The police say a patrol unit received information about 12:45 a.m. that armed men were at a property in the community. The team went to the Jobs Lane location and, after entering, reportedly noticed a man fleeing.

While searching the house, the constabulary alleges that Somers emerged from under a bed and pointed a firearm at the officers. Police say they responded in self-defence by opening fire.

Following the shooting, officers said they seized a .357 Magnum revolver with five cartridges from Somers. He was transported to Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has started an inquiry into the fatal shooting.
