South Florida Jamaicans Back From Deed to Key Property Investment Conference

4 min read

Jamaicans living across South Florida gave a strong response to the first From Deed to Key Investment and Housing Conference, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sunrise Sawgrass Mills.

The gathering brought industry specialists, investors, professionals and diaspora members into one forum centred on property, housing and wealth-building opportunities in Jamaica. Its message was that Jamaica still offers room for investment, and that Jamaicans overseas can play a role in the country’s development.

Organiser Maxine Miller said the inaugural event exceeded expectations, with participants showing keen interest in land ownership, housing, investment prospects and ways to build wealth in Jamaica.

“We intentionally brought together the right people to have the right conversations,” said Miller. “The conference featured a diverse panel of experts, including an attorney, land surveyor, engineer, energy consultant, financial professionals, and entrepreneurs who shared their knowledge and experiences. Their presentations reinforced a common theme—that Jamaica offers tremendous opportunities for those willing to invest, build, and create a lasting legacy.”

Miller said the timing mattered because Jamaica is still recovering and rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa. “Every challenge presents an opportunity; we just have to doubt the doubt,” she said. “This is a time for Jamaicans everywhere to look at how they can participate in rebuilding communities, strengthening families, and investing in the country’s long-term development.”

Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Oliver Mair, gave opening remarks and welcomed the initiative. He urged diaspora members to look seriously at investment options in Jamaica and pointed to the contribution overseas Jamaicans can make to economic growth and nation-building through enterprise and investment.

Commissioner and Vice Mayor Carson Edwards also endorsed the concept. He said the conference could be taken to other diaspora centres, including Atlanta, New York, Canada and the United Kingdom, where interest in Jamaican property ownership and investment is rising.

Staged under the theme “Invest in Yuh Piece of Di Rock,” the conference focused on education, practical guidance and empowerment. Organisers kept the programme non-political, with sessions built around solutions and clear steps for people seeking to own, develop or secure property in Jamaica.

The wider message, “Taking Jamaica to Jamaicans, for Jamaicans, by Jamaicans,” connected with those in attendance. Participants said they valued the chance to better understand inherited property, land regularisation, boundary issues, development, financing and sustainable energy options.

Presentations on surveying, legal routes to ownership, construction, financing and renewable energy drew steady questions and discussion throughout the day. The engagement showed the demand among Jamaicans overseas for reliable advice and resources to help them move through the investment and homeownership process with more confidence.

For many who attended, the event went beyond information-sharing. It also served as a reminder of what can happen when Jamaicans abroad maintain ties to the island and take part in its growth.

Organisers said the positive response from participants, presenters and stakeholders has positioned the From Deed to Key Investment and Housing Conference as a useful platform for education, dialogue and investment. They are already looking at future stagings, with interest and requests coming from diaspora communities in Atlanta and New York.

The day also included a marketplace with exhibitors who travelled from Jamaica to support the initiative. Keller Williams Jamaica Realty, Wong’s Realty, Sagicor Property Services, VM Group, VM Property Services and Cedars Estate were among the organisations presenting products and services and speaking directly with attendees.

The exhibition space remained active through the day, creating opportunities for business discussions, professional networking and direct connections between Jamaican industry players and members of the diaspora. Organisers said that support strengthened the conference’s goal of linking Jamaicans overseas with trusted resources and practical paths to investing and owning homes in Jamaica.

Details on the next staging are expected in the coming weeks. Persons interested in updates are being directed to follow @FromDeedtoKey on social media.

As the first staging ended, organisers said the central takeaway was that Jamaica’s development is being influenced not only by residents on the island, but also by Jamaicans overseas who continue to believe in the country, invest in it and build their own stake in the Rock.

The From Deed to Key Investment and Housing Conference is intended to connect Jamaicans at home and abroad with information, resources and professional support for land ownership, housing development, investment and wealth creation in Jamaica. The initiative aims to use education, collaboration and partnerships to help turn property ownership into generational wealth and long-term legacy.
