US referee Ismail Elfath to take charge of England–Argentina World Cup semi-final

1 min read

FIFA has assigned American match official Ismail Elfath to take charge of the World Cup semi-final pitting England against Argentina.

At 44, Elfath already has three assignments at the competition under his belt: Japan against the Netherlands, Uruguay against Spain, and Norway’s round-of-16 win over Brazil. In that Norway–Brazil contest he showed six yellow cards and sent one player off with a straight red.

He has crossed paths with Lionel Messi before. He worked as fourth official when Argentina lifted the 2022 World Cup and later took the whistle for Inter Miami’s 2023 Leagues Cup final triumph — Messi’s first piece of silverware with the Florida side.

Two other Americans, Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, will run the lines as assistant referees, with Italy’s Maurizio Mariani listed as fourth official.

Elfath has been on the Major League Soccer roster since 2012 and has collected the MLS Referee of the Year award on two occasions.
