CB Chicken brings joy to Allman Town Primary on Read Across Jamaica Day

KINGSTON, Jamaica— A book has the power to open minds, spark imagination, and shape the future, and for the students of Allman Town Primary, this year’s Read Across Jamaica Day did just that.

There was no shortage of excitement at Allman Town Primary School in Kingston as CB Chicken joined in the celebration of Read Across Jamaica Day on Tuesday, May 5.

What started as a simple reading session quickly turned into something much more.

Across Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes, students leaned in, asked questions, laughed, and fully immersed themselves in the stories being shared. It was interactive, lively, and a clear reminder that reading can be both fun and enriching.

Adding to the energy was Chicky, the CB Chicken mascot, who brought plenty of good vibes while encouraging students to see reading as something they can truly enjoy. The excitement didn’t stop there, students were thrilled to receive CB Foods activity books, colouring books, and branded buttons, eagerly flipping through pages and picking out their favourite button.

A thoughtful highlight of the day was the selection of books, all written by Jamaican authors, including The Little Lion Series by Kellie Magnus, Jamaica in My Tummy by Jean Hawthorne Dacosta, and Magnus the Mongoose by Alison Latchman.

“We intentionally selected books by Jamaican authors because we wanted students to see themselves reflected in the stories they read,” said Nicole Hall, senior manager – commercial marketing at CB Foods. “It’s important that they recognise their own culture, voices, and experiences, as it helps build pride and confidence while inspiring them to dream bigger.”

CB Chicken also extended its support beyond the classroom with a donation of 10 cases of chicken, reinforcing the connection between proper nutrition and a child’s ability to learn and grow. Additional story books were donated to the classes, ensuring the impact of the day continues long after the final page was turned.

With Teachers’ Day following immediately after, the moment was also used to show appreciation for the educators who make it all possible. The principal and teachers were surprised with gift packages from CB Chicken and gift certificates to Pork Store & More, a meaningful gesture to recognise their dedication.

Guidance counsellor Tasheka MacKenzie shared that the initiative left a lasting impression.

“CB Chicken and the school have built a strong relationship over the years, and initiatives like this continue to make a real impact,” she said. “Even after the day ended, the children were still talking about the experience and proudly showing their tokens to other students. It was not only enjoyable for them, but it also encouraged them to read more and strive to do well.”

Reflecting on the day’s activities, Hall noted the genuine impact of the experience.

“One of the most fulfilling parts of the day was getting the chance to connect with the students,” she shared. “You could see them light up, smiling, answering questions, pointing at the pages, and really getting involved in the stories. Moments like these remind you how important it is to pause, take time to read, and create meaningful connections with children.”
