INDECOM Probing Fatal Police Shooting in Portmore

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting of a man in Dunbeholden, Portmore, on Thursday night.

According to police reports, the incident occurred about 8:45 p.m. when members of the St Catherine South Quick Response Unit were conducting patrols in the Gilbert Avenue area.

Lawmen reported that they observed a man standing with what appeared to be a firearm tucked in his waistband. Officers reportedly moved tactically toward a nearby premises and heard movement inside the property.

Upon reaching an open rear door, police said they saw two men inside, one of whom matched the description of the individual previously observed with the weapon.

Police allege that the man drew the firearm and opened fire at the officers. The lawmen reportedly took evasive action and returned fire. During the confrontation, one of the men is said to have fled the scene.

The armed suspect allegedly ran further into the house and was pursued by police. Officers reported that upon reaching the kitchen area, the man again pointed the firearm at them, resulting in a second exchange of gunfire.

When the shooting ended, the suspect was found suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said he was still clutching a Beretta pistol fitted with a magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition.

The injured man was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity has not yet been released.

INDECOM has since commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, in keeping with its mandate to probe incidents involving the security forces.

Investigations are ongoing.
