Holness首相、Labour Day事業で市民の誇りとハリケーンへの備えを呼びかけ

Dr Andrew Holness首相は、一部のJamaicansの間で国民としての誇りが弱いとする懸念を示し、それが道路脇や共有の公共空間へのごみの投棄が続いていることと結び付いていると述べた。

またHolness首相はこの機会を利用し、数日後に迫った2026年大西洋ハリケーンシーズンに備え、排水路の清掃、危険となり得る樹木の剪定、悪天候が到来する前の家屋の安全確保をJamaicansに呼びかけた。

Holness首相は月曜日、2つのNational Labour Day事業の一つであるSabina Parkで発言した。これに先立ち、もう一つの国家事業であるSt ElizabethのLewis Town Early Childhood Institutionでの作業にも参加していた。

首相は、市民としての規律とより清潔な地域社会を求める呼びかけが繰り返されているにもかかわらず、なぜ一部の人々がなお無責任にごみを捨てることを選ぶのかと問いかけた。

“As you travel and you look on the side of the highways, you see the travel waste and you wonder what has gone wrong in the country. Where is the national pride? Why would someone drink their juice and feel that it’s okay to throw the plastic bottle through the window? Why?” Holness首相は、同島を代表するクリケット会場でボランティアに向けて話しながら、目に見える懸念を示して問いただした。

Holness首相は、Jamaicaの発展は道路、施設、その他のインフラ整備だけに依存することはできず、そうした投資を適切に守るには公共の場での行動も改善されなければならないと述べた。

“So it’s not that we only need to build great infrastructure, we also need to change the minds of the people who occupy that infrastructure. So on this Labour Day, as we labour to preserve this wonderful piece of infrastructure, we also contemplate these things,” とHolness首相は述べた。

Holness首相が発言した際、政府閣僚、野党代表、自治体関係者、ボランティアらはSabina Parkで塗装や清掃作業に参加していた。同会場では今後数カ月の間に、Caribbean Premier Leagueの試合を含む複数の主要クリケット試合が開催される見通しだ。

Holness首相は、Labour Dayは通常の仕事を休む休日以上のものと見るべきだと述べた。首相の見解では、それはより強い地域社会を築き、ハリケーンシーズンにしばしば伴う問題に備えるために活用されるべきものだという。

“So I encourage all Jamaicans, ‘It’s not too late to use this time to walk around your house and look for the trees that are a threat to your roof… check your generator, re-heat it; put together your emergency stock of food and other items. Look for that drain or culvert that may be blocked in your community and help to clean it,” とHolness首相は述べた。

Holness首相は、ハリケーンへの備えは全国で人々が協力して行動することにかかっているとし、個人が取る小さな行動も、積み重なれば大きな違いを生むと付け加えた。

“Do something! Every individual taking action in their own sphere together can synergistically change the nation, so I urge all Jamaicans to bear that in mind,” と首相は付け加えた。

またHolness首相は、St ElizabethのLewis Town Early Childhood Institutionが国家事業に選ばれたのは、2025年10月28日にJamaicaの一部地域に影響を及ぼしたHurricane Melissaからの復旧に今なお取り組む地域社会に焦点を当て続けるためだったと述べた。

Holness首相はこれに先立ちSt Elizabethを訪れ、同校で屋根工事、塗装、清掃活動に参加した。首相は、ハリケーンで被害を受けた地域の多くの住民が、数カ月後の今も厳しい状況に直面していると述べた。

“But there are still many Jamaicans without roof, without amenities, without livelihoods that are affected,” とHolness首相は述べた。

Sabina ParkでのLabour Day活動に参加した野党党首Mark Goldingは、歴史あるクリケット場を今年の主要国家事業に含める決定を支持した。

“It’s a legendary facility around the world, and we have to keep it at a standard that is befitting of its tremendous legacy,” とGoldingは述べ、子どもの頃にそこでクリケットの試合を見に行ったことを振り返った。
