Kenisha Beckford retains women's 800m crown at JAAA/PUMA national championships
Kenisha Beckford successfully defended her national title in the women's 800 metres on day three of the JAAA/PUMA National Junior and Senior Championships, crossing the line in 2 minutes 02.74 seconds to become a back-to-back champion.
Beckford entered the final as the season leader and the fastest Jamaican woman over the distance this year, having posted 1 minute 58.46 seconds earlier in the campaign. She had also recorded sub-1:59 performances twice before the meet, underlining her status as the athlete to beat.
Ten runners lined up for the final. Beckford moved to the front early and controlled the pace through the opening lap, passing 200 metres in about 27 seconds and reaching the halfway mark in 58 seconds. Adelle Tracey, who had won the 1500 metres title the previous evening, sat in third for much of the race before launching a late challenge on the final bend.
Beckford held her ground down the home straight to secure victory, with Tracey finishing second in 2:03.93. Guyana's national champion Aliya Moore took third in 2:04.69, and former Edwin Allen captain Liana Lewis was fourth in 2:04.82.
Also in the field were Edwin Allen schoolgirl Kevona Davis-Fowler, Anastasia Blackwood, Gabrielle Wilkinson, and Sineal Clark-Giddings. Organisers faced lane-assignment confusion before the start, with several athletes not positioned in their designated lanes and the stadium announcer introducing competitors who were not on the track.
