Jamaica Defence Force April review covers hurricane rebuilds, veteran centenary and workforce training

The Jamaica Defence Force outlined a wide-ranging April programme spanning hurricane recovery, milestone ceremonies, veteran recognition, gender policy awards, community outreach and technical training for service members.

The 1 Engineer Regiment has been central to rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Melissa passed in November. On April 2, the unit marked its 34th anniversary with a church service and route march in St. Elizabeth, led by commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Akeem Horton James. The events underscored the regiment's commitment to national service and the dedication of its engineers.

On April 17, the force joined celebrations for the 100th birthday of Royal Air Force veteran LAC 713742 Rexford Owen Thame, who joined the JDF in 1944 and served as a radar operator with the RAF during World War II.

On April 23, the JDF participated in a mainstreaming certification ceremony at the AC Hotel alongside the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Bureau of Gender Affairs. The event recognised organisations that have integrated gender considerations into their policies, programmes and operations. The JDF received a special award for transformation under its gender optimisation policy, led by Major Audrey Dennis, Force Gender Advisor.

Members also joined law enforcement partners for a torch run in support of Special Olympics Jamaica. Commissioner of Police Dr. Kevin Blake was among those present at the launch.

The Department of Veterans Affairs, in partnership with Sagicor, hosted a health fair at Burke Barracks, providing medical services to veterans in St. James.

On April 29, ninety-four members graduated from a one-year diploma programme in coding at the HEART NSTA Stony Hill campus. Through a partnership with HEART NSTA and Amber India, participants received specialised training in mobile application and web development.

That same day, the Jamaica National Reserve led the second force study day. Major Stevens presented planned administrative improvements and a proposed digital database for capturing information, while the Chief of Defence Staff offered guidance and updates to service members.

Trainees in the JDF and HEART NSTA Trust Skills Training for Workforce Development programmes have entered the final phase of practical electrical and administrative assistant courses following training at the HEART NSTA Trust Rockfort Vocational Training Centre.
